Overview

Startup description

My platform is an app that let's distributed or remote teams run their standup (status) meetings asynchronously from within Slack. It was originally built to solve a problem I personally experienced with standup meetings being difficult to plan with remote teams.

Key highlights:

Annual revenue: ~$975

MRR: $81.41

Customers: 4

Churn: ~33%

LTV: ~$60

Monthly running costs: ~$25

Team

This project has always been completely built and maintained by myself as a side project.

Reason for selling

The reason I'm looking to sell my platform is that I have no time to commit to the project as I've been primarily focused on other side projects for quite some time. In addition to that, the interest just hasn't been there for myself for a while (as this stage is largely marketing and less building which is the part I enjoy most).

I do believe my platform has a lot of potential and that's why I'd love to find it a good home with someone who is capable of growing the product. I have not actively worked on the product from a marketing or even technical perspective in quite some time, so it runs fairly autonomously. There are some areas I could see worthy of investing in for future growth / winning customers (more on that below), but at it's core, all required features to be competitive in the space are present.

At it's peak, the platform had 13 customers with ~$300 MRR with little to no work being done on my end, so I believe the right person could easily get back to that point and far exceed it given how well competitors have been doing in the space with a similar feature set. Areas like customer outreach and touch points have been an area I have not been great at, so it would likely go a long way as well.

Tech stack, components, and associated operating costs:

There are 8 components that make up the tech stack:

UI: built with React and costs $0/month (currently hosted for free as a static site on render.com)

Marketing site: built with React / Gatsby and costs $0/month (currently hosted for free as a static site on render.com)

Help site: built with React / Gatsby and costs $0/month (currently hosted for free as a static site on render.com)

API server: built with Node.js and costs $7/month (currently hosted on render.com)

Bot (Slack app) server: built with Node.js and costs $7/month (currently hosted on render.com)

Trial checking Lambda: runs daily to check trials and is built with Node.js / Lambda and costs $0/month (currently hosted on AWS and is included in the free tier usage)

Standup checking Lambda: runs every 15min to check standups to run and is built with Node.js / Lambda and costs $0/month (currently hosted on AWS and is included in the free tier usage)

MongoDB Database: costs ~$10/month (current hosted and managed by MongoDB Atlas)

Total running costs per month: ~$25.

Marketing and growth

No real marketing or growth work has been done on my end, other than some light cold emailing which returned good results, however I did not stay consistent with it. Overall, all customers / trial users have come organically through the website, through the blog (content marketing), or through the Slack app store (it's an approved app).

Return on investment

This would depend on growth. If the growth gets back up to even it's peak I was able to achieve (~$300 MRR), the return on investment would be quick. With proper marketing and growth strategies, it would likely been even faster.

Future ideas / considerations

Although I consider the product to be largely feature complete and in an idling state, there are some ideas that I believe could take it to the next level and win over more customers:

Adding support for other platforms like Microsoft Teams or Discord. Currently it only supports Slack, which is the largest market share

Adding AI into the product to help users speed up the reporting process or to allow managers to get better overviews of what's going on

Adding workflows. I believe this could be a strong differentiator to other competitors. For example, allow admins to create workflows based on their team member reports such as message user X on Slack when user Y completes their standup or message user A when any user mentions term "XYZ" in their report, etc

Adding more flexibility to reporting such as vacation or holiday support

Adding summaries for manager / admin level staff such that they can receive an overview of all reports for the given day for their team

Startup assets

All startup assets are included in the sale:

Codebase mentioned above (currently it's a Github Organization)

Facebook page with 1 like

Instagram page with 23 followers

X page with 23 followers

Domain

Transfer of ownership of the Slack app in the official Slack store

Transfer of ownership of cloud assets (generic @gmail.com account, Grafana cloud logs account)

Risks

I don't forsee any major risks other than the traditional tech product ones that involve around maintaining the product. For example, if Slack were to changed their APIs (they typically don't very often), the product would need some shifting to comply with that.

Summary

I believe that my product is a great opportunity for someone who has experience marketing and growing SaaS products or has interest in the space. There is a LOT of potential in the space with the rise of remote work and this type of product is something that is seen in the tech area a fair bit (the concept of "standups"), however users have not been limited to just tech teams which has been an interesting insight. With how much MRR the competitors are at, even capturing a small percentage of the market would have huge upside.

✅ $975 in ARR✅ 4 customers✅ Business model: SaaS✅ Built with Node.js, AWS, Amazon
