Overview

Startup description

My product was created as a solution to the steadily increasing problem in the optometry world, where patients take their contact lens prescription from the clinic and purchase the lenses online or from a big box store. My product is a comparison tool designed to show the patient at checkout that the clinic's pricing is competitive and often better than the big box stores. It has proven to increase contact lens sales for the smaller clinics by up to 60% month over month.

Key highlights:

Annual revenue: $4,615

Annual profit: ~$4,000

Churn rate: 0%

LTV: ~$4,300 per customer

CAC: Has not been formally measured. Customer acquisition to date has been founder-led through direct outreach and industry relationships, with minimal paid marketing spend.

Business margin: ~85%

Team

CEO - handles basic day-to-day operations. Has been putting ~1 hour per week into the business for the last several months.

CTO - handles the tech stack and also puts ~1 hour into the business.

CPO - was integral in the creation of the application. As a clinic that suffered from losing clients, his knowledge base led to the workflow and simple use that the tool uses today. He is not active in day-to-day operations since the product was released.

Tech Stack

Vercel, Supabase, etc.

Marketing and growth

Cold calling clinics across the US. Probably made 50 to 100 calls and spoke with decision-makers about 50% of the time. Landed 3 clients. Also ran an automated email campaign with AI that was unsuccessful. Attended the annual Optometry conference where the big players in the contact lens space were. Had serious interest in licensing our software from 3 of the largest manufacturers in the contact lens space.

Return on investment

We paid off our investment in one year.

Startup assets

Email list with over 20,000 clinics across the USA

The full tech stack

Risks

The main risks are that you cannot sign on new clinics. If you have decent sales skills and strong marketing, there's no reason why you can't sign up clinics. The clinics that have a license, as of today, have not left.

Summary

Our application is complete, simple to use, and has proven results. With dedicated efforts, recurring revenue should be fairly simple to add clinics and recurring SAAS revenue.

✅ $4,615 TTM revenue

✅ 4 customers

✅ Business model: SaaS

✅ Built with Supabase, Bootstrap, Vercel
